Richard W. Hemphill, M.D.

Of O’Hara Twp., passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the age of 90 with his family at his side. Born September 28, 1927 in Apollo, Pa, he was the son of the late Lynn and Helen ( Sheplar) Hemphill.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Parris Hemphill and a grandson Kristopher Barkus. Surviving relatives include his son Dr. Vito Hemphill, D.C. of Santa Fe, NM and his daughter Pamela (Robert) Barkus R.N. of Butler, Pa. Dick and Peggy were the proud grandparents of 6 grandchildren, Robert (Stephanie) Barkus of Cranberry Township, Pa., Alison (David) Roperti of York, Pa., Marah(Justin) McMillen of L.A. California, Victoria Hemphill of DelMar, Ca., Eden Hemphill of Mokelumne, Ca. and the late Kristopher "Kit" Barkus. Also surviving are 4 great grandchildren, Anna, Nicholas, Hayden and Ensley and his cherished caregiver Georgie Torretti  and family. Dr. Hemphill graduated from Apollo High School, Mercersburg Academy and Princeton University. After WWII, he served at the 97th Army Hospital as a corpsman. During that time he taught intro Psychology to soldiers at Frankfort University.He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and completed graduate training at Magee Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh.  He was elected to Sigma XI Research society and became a member of AOA Honor Medical Society. Dick served as president of the Magee Women’s Hospital Medical staff and President of the Pittsburgh OB GYN society. In 1959 he was honored to deliver a report at the Second International Federation of OB GYN. In 2001, Dr. Hemphill was the recipient of the Elizabeth McCullough Award for his work at the Magee Womens Research Institute,where he became an honorary member. He was honored to deliver the granddaughter of one of our US Presidents.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11 a.m.  at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, with his dear friend Rev. Lee Nichols, presiding.  Memorial contributions can be made to the Kit Barkus Music Scholarship Fund, 134 September Drive, Butler, Pa. 16002. Info can also be found at
