Thaddeus B. "Ted" Massalski, Ph.D., D.Sc 

Age 96, passed away peacefully at home with his family around him on Friday, December 2, 2022. He was born in Warsaw, Poland on June 29, 1926. Following service in the British army during World War II he attended the Reggio Politecnico di Torino in Italy and studied Chemistry and Engineering. He then moved to the United Kingdom and attended the University of Birmingham where he received his Ph. D. in Physical and Theoretical Metallurgy in 1954. He later received his D.Sc. from Birmingham University in 1964 for his work in the field of the theory of alloys. After studying at the University of Chicago as a post doctoral fellow he joined the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh as one of the research directors in 1960. When Mellon Institute and Carnegie Technical Institute merged to form Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) he became Institute Professor and eventually joined two departments: Materials Science and Engineering and Physics. At the time of his passing he was Professor Emeritus. Dr. Massalski wrote and published a number of books, published journal articles and was the editor of two prestigious scientific journals, Progress in Material Science and Metallurgical Transactions. 

Dr. Massalski met and married Sheila Joan Harris in 1953, while studying at the University of Birmingham. They had three children, Renny (Massalski) Hutton, Peter Massalski (deceased) and Christopher Massalski. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law MaryJo Monico and three grandchildren, Alex Massalski, Christina Massalski and Ann Evelyn Hutton as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews all over the world.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 8, 2022 from 3-7 PM at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall. A Christian Funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King Parish-St. Scholastica Church, 309 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall, PA 15215 on Friday, December 9th at 10:00 AM with Fr. Robert G. Duch, officiating. Private burial will occur the following day at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown PA, where he will be laid next to his dear wife, Sheila.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Polish Cultural Council in Pittsburgh at P.O Box 81054, Pittsburgh, PA 15217-0554 or on their website: polishculturalcouncil.org May he rest in eternal peace.
