Susanne Wilson Hershey
Age 74, of O’Hara Twp. died after a long illness on Thursday, February 18, 2021. She was born on March 13, 1946 in Rochester, New York, the daughter of the late Richard M. and Carolyn R. Wilson. Sue is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dale Hershey, by her children, Lauren Dixon (Michael Rossiter) of Toronto, Canada, and Alex Hershey (Tina) of Pittsburgh, by her brother, Stewart W. Wilson (Renate) of Concord, Massachusetts, and by four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Sue graduated from Harvard with a BA cum laude in 1967 and received an MA and later a PhD degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976. She worked at Winchester Thurston School for eighteen years as a teacher, student counselor, and college counselor. She helped countless students in shaping their educational careers. She was an avid pianist, reader, and thinker.
Sue was an accomplished equestrian. She began riding at the age of ten and hunted as a teenager with the Genesee Valley Hunt. As a member of the Genesee Valley Hunt Pony Club, she competed in rallies and event competitions and finished as an “A." Working with the United States Eventing Association, she was instrumental in establishing and implementing a program for certifying qualified teachers of riding. She wrote numerous articles on the teaching of riding techniques in the USEA magazine Eventing USA. In 2003 Sue was awarded a USEA Governor’s Cup for her service to the sport. She was highly regarded internationally by participants in the sport of eventing.
There will be no visitation. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In her memory, contributions are suggested to Doctors Without Borders or to The Climate Reality Project.
