Mary Jo (Scott) Smith
Age 82, of Shadyside, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Beloved wife of the late Raymond H. Smith. Loving mother of Kathleen Roberts (Tom) and Jeffrey Smith (Colleen); cherished grandmother of Matt and Emma Kleinman and Conor and Reilly Smith; and step-grandmother of Rebecca Lugo and Alex Roberts. Dear sister of William Scott (Emmy), Robert Scott (Mary), and Margaret Royston (James), and dear cousin of Barbara Hughes (Bill), whom she considered a sister.
Mary Jo was a devoted lover of the arts, literature, and lifelong learning. Her curiosity was evident in everything she did—whether traveling, skiing, practicing yoga, or welcoming international students into her home.
A passionate reader, she found joy and meaning in books and was always eager to explore new ideas and perspectives. Through literature, she deepened her understanding of the world and the people in it.
That same curiosity inspired her love of travel and her interest in the cultures, traditions, and daily life of people around the world.
She cherished time with family and loved to entertain, making everyone feel welcome through her gracious hospitality. She delighted in classical music and was an avid attendee of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Above all, Mary Jo will be remembered for her intellect, warmth, and quiet elegance. Her life was a testament to curiosity, generosity of spirit, and the enduring value of the arts. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, culture, and inspiration that will continue to resonate with those who knew and loved her.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff of Woodside Place and The Willows in Oakmont for the gentle care that they provided our Mom through this journey.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 8th, 10:30 AM at Aspinwall Presbyterian Church, 299 Center Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15215. Interment Private.
