Mary S. Sutphin
Age 101, formerly of O'Hara Twp. passed away peacefully in Arvada, Colorado on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late Eldon M. Sutphin, Sr.; loving mother of Eldon M. Jr. (Karen), Mary Elsasser (late, John) and Gary (Kathy); cherished grandmother of Michelle Markey (Ray), Heather Sutphin, Christopher Elsasser (Elizabeth) and Jen Burleigh; and six treasured great grandchildren.
Mary had a listening ear, a warm heart, and open arms. She had the gift of compassion, and always made herself available if someone was hurting. She was truly a selfless person.
Many of her fellow church members referred to her as "a guardian angel." She served for many years in her church in various roles, and was a Stephen minister. She reupholstered much of the furniture and made a large banner that was displayed in the sanctuary.
After her husband, Eldon, passed away, Mary began driving for Meals on Wheels in the Pittsburgh area. She finally retired when she was 90 to move to Colorado. Many of her recipients were actually much younger than she was.
Her friends and family members remember her famous gifts of delicious homemade pies they enjoyed over the years, and they would always mention that she made the best pies. Additionally, she was a master seamstress who started sewing her own clothes at the age of seven after her mother discovered she had been secretly using the treadle sewing machine since the age of 5. She continued throughout her life making not only her own clothes, but clothing and alterations for friends, family and church fundraisers.
The most "scandalous" thing Mary ever did was to elope on her 18th birthday. Mary and Eldon had enjoyed almost 54 years of marriage at the time of Eldon's passing.
Mary's family would like to give a special thanks to Paul Ajak II for his final caretaking of this much-loved woman.
The family would also like to thank The Gardens on Quail and Aviant Hospice for their loving care during her stay in Colorado.
No Visitation. Private burial will take place at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, PA. Funeral arrangements by the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall.
Memorial donations can be made to: Aviant Hospice, 7000 E. Belleview Ave, Suite #370 Greenwood Village, CO 80111 PH: 303-953-7270
