Larry Roberts Obituary

Larry Lee Roberts

Age 82, of O'Hara Twp., formerly of Detroit, MI, died at home on Friday, May 17, 2024. Beloved husband of 56 years to the late Betty (Martin) Roberts; loving father of Laura (David) Pechersky; cherished grandfather of Sasha and Theo Pechersky; dear brother of Eileen Plescher and Kenneth Roberts. He was born in Hastings, MI on March 5, 1942 to the late Elwin and Eva (nee: McLaury) Roberts.

In 1963, Betty caught Larry’s eye while waitressing at the Tally Ho. He was smitten right away and after asking Betty many times for her hand in marriage, she finally agreed to wed in 1966. Larry went on to complete college and received his JD at Wayne State Law School. The couple lived in Germany for 3 years while Larry served in the Army. After moving to Detroit in the early 1970’s, Larry and Betty were blessed with their first and only child, Laura, in 1983. They were very active in their neighborhood of Indian Village where they entertained life long friends and cared deeply for its history and traditions.

Larry worked as a dedicated prosecuting attorney for Wayne County for many years. His proudest accomplishment was winning a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1996, with his family in tow. Larry was an avid runner and spent most of his lunch hours with his co-workers jogging around Belle Isle. He completed a multitude of marathons and trail races. Larry also donated 16 gallons of blood to the Red Cross throughout his life and loved watching Formula 1 Races, especially the Detroit Grand Prix. Betty and Larry remained committed to each other for their entire lives and were always together. They enjoyed delicious food, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and lively conversation with their neighbors.

After Betty’s passing (2022), Larry moved to Pittsburgh and spent his days with loving caregivers and the extended Pechersky family. He was fond of classical music, birdwatching, and salmon (prepared any way).

His greatest joy was being “Papa” to Sasha and Theo, and spending time with Hazel and Vivian, the family dogs. To those who knew him, Larry’s wit and sarcasm will be forever remembered. His favorite lyric by the Rolling Stones embodied his personality very well: “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.”

No visitation. Service and Interment Private. A celebration of life will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions be made to the “Betty Roberts’ Scholarship for the Arts”, checks made to: Indian Village Women Garden Club and mailed to 2990 Seminole Street, Detroit, MI 48214.
