Joanne S. Gould
September 28, 1926 - March 8, 2022
Joanne Gould was born in 1926, the daughter of Judge John Mickle Stager and Eudora Downing Stager. She grew up in Sterling, Illinois, and graduated from Wells College in 1948. While working in New York City she met Rodney S. Gould (preceded in death). They were married in 1950 and lived in Pittsburgh since 1951. Her sisters, Clara S. Hockaday and Mary Cecil Etnyre, preceded her in death as did her parents. Surviving her are two sons and a daughter and four grandchildren: Rodney, Jr. (Rosaline), Trevor and Angus; Anne; and Courtland (Sherri), Bennett and Allison.
Her years of volunteer work in fields of social work included The Lighthouse for the Blind and St. George's Settlement House in New York City; the Arsenal Health Center in Lawrenceville; the Children's Home of Pittsburgh, social service boards of Presbyterian Hospital and St. Margaret Memorial Hospital; tutoring at Rogers Elementary School in Garfield; and was a charter member of Parents Anonymous. She was active in the League of Women Voters; a member of Fox Chapel Episcopal Church; and a charter member of the Fox Chapel Racquet Club.
Joanne enjoyed tennis most of her life, reading, family pets, and most of all, she cherished gatherings of family and friends which included the house parties she and Rod hosted at their summer home on the upper Allegheny River near Tionesta. Among travels with her husband, highlights were a 4,000-mile honeymoon tour of England and the Continent on a pair of lightweight motorcycles and a camping, camera safari in the Serengeti.
There will be no visitation and a family service will be private. Arrangements by Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home, Aspinwall
The family respectfully suggests memorials to the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer.
