Frances Rice Obituary

Frances R. Rice

Age 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2020.  Beloved wife of the late Richard A. Rice Jr.; loving mother of Richard A. Rice, lll (Francesca Paolucci-Rice), Paul C. Rice (Rebecca Rice, former spouse), and John S. Rice (Katherine A. Baldwin); and cherished grandmother of Marissa Rice Zamarripa (Oscar Zamarripa), Travis Rice, and Ashley Rice.  The daughter of M. Carroll Robertson and Marion Shipley, she was born November 9, 1923 in Bryn Mawr, Pa.  Frances grew up on Long Island where she became an excellent horsewoman.  After attending Miss Porter’s School, she proudly assisted at the Boston Naval Hospital during WWII.  Frances married in 1943, and lived in Fox Chapel for 51 years where her husband was a professor at Carnegie-Mellon.  A voracious reader, Frances was perfectly suited for her bookstore career.  She had endless love for her family, dogs, horses, and books.  Frances was devoted to her award-winning orchids and garden club, her church, Christ Church Fox Chapel, the Sewjourners sewing group, and especially the family’s summer place at the Huron Mountain Club in the U.P. of Michigan on the shores of Gitche Gumee.  Among her most cherished moments was having afternoon tea with family and friends.  The family extends special thanks to the Visiting Angels, everyone at UPMC St. Margaret, and the Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home. Private family visitation and services were held with burial next to her husband in the Big Bay Cemetery, MI. Donations in her honor may be made to the Huron Mountain Wildlife Foundation, www.hmwf.org.
