Ferd Sauereisen Obituary

Ferd J. Sauereisen

A resident of Aspinwall and Fox Chapel, “Chief” passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the age of 88. A blind date with Molly (Young) Sauereisen led to sixty two years of love and devotion. Ferd and Molly raised three children:  Elizabeth S. Allen (Greg), J. Eric Sauereisen (Rene) and Sandra C. Sauereisen (Mark A. Taylor); cherished grandfather of Erik, Jake, Cooper and Ivy Allen; Ferd Jes and Aurora Sauereisen and Madison, Christian and Claire Taylor, brother of the late Phillips F. Sauereisen and William P. Sauereisen.

He received a BA,BS dual-degree from Allegheny College and Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining the Aluminum Company of America in 1960 he served two tours of duty as an officer in the United States Army.  Ferd retired as Chairman of Sauereisen, Inc., a global provider of ceramic adhesives and coatings.    Dedicated to Allegheny College he enthusiastically served as a trustee and was presented the honor of Trustee Emeritus.  His lifelong commitment to community included serving the Aspinwall Presbyterian Church for more than sixty years and board positions in Fox Chapel, Pa; The District Association, Fox Chapel Water Authority, Land Trust and the Fox Chapel Borough Park Commission as well appointments to the Western PA District Export Council and the Federal Reserve Board of Cleveland.

Chief was notorious for his quick humor and repertoire of jokes.  As a voracious reader, he daily consumed multiple news sources including Grisham and Clancy. Also a sportsman, he cherished his children and grandchildren’s athletic exploits, attending every event proudly wearing team colors.  He had the smoothest basketball layup.  He did his own stunts. Racquets, biking, travel, home maintenance and jitterbugging were all in his wheelhouse. He possessed a mastery of storytelling and had the ability to link relevant personal experiences to all ages and backgrounds.

His ready smile, kindness, humility, generosity, love of country and genuine interest in others with be sorely missed.  His lessons of love, friendship, determination, and civic responsibility will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
