Eleanor Ann “Tomie” Smith
April 7, 1926 – August 11, 2025
Eleanor Ann Smith, affectionately known as “Tomie”, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025 surrounded by family. She was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on April 7, 1926. She was a loyal sister to the late G. Roger Smith and Clifford Smith, a loving aunt to Cindy DeBaldo (Pete), Jennifer Cochran (Roland), Lisa Fisher (Gordy) and Holly Smith. Tomie is also survived by 6 grand-nieces, 1 grand-nephew and several cousins. She is fondly remembered by her friends Patty Maslanka, Stephanie Lautar-Weidner. Her family is grateful for the numerous caregivers who assisted Tomie in recent years. Eleanor lived a long and vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and rich memories.
Known for her adventurous spirit from a young age, Eleanor earned the nickname “Tomie” for being a tomboy who wasn’t afraid to join the boys in a game of football. That spirited determination would define much of her life. Tomie graduated from National Cathedral School in Washington, DC. Her career started with nearly a decade working for West Penn Power before she embraced adventure and spent memorable years in California. She eventually returned to Pittsburgh to be with family working first at Equibank and later Muggins clothing store. Tomie was happiest sharing stories from her life in Greensburg, usually with a chilled cocktail in hand and laughter filling the room.
She had a deep love for the game of golf—both playing it and watching it on TV. Whether on the green or cheering from her favorite chair, the game brought her joy and connection. Tomie spoke with great fondness of her Bedlington Terriers Desi, Welly and Duffy. She was always ready to tune in for a Pittsburgh Pirates or Steelers game no matter how the season was unfolding.
Tomie’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched many lives. She was a loyal friend, and a woman who lived with authenticity and grace. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Burial will be private.
A celebration of Tomie’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a charity of your choice in her memory.
