Age 97, formerly of Uniontown, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2023. She was the daughter of Scott and Grace (Barnes) Deal; beloved wife of 55 years to the late William R. “Bill” Crago, Jr.; loving mother of Diane C. Tung (Alfred) of Pittsburgh, and Scott Crago (Debbie) of Uniontown; cherished grandmother of Simon Tung (Nengah) of Melbourne, Australia, Damien Tung of Tokyo, Japan, Brandon Tung (Rachel) of New York, NY, Ashley Elkins (Jonathon) of Culpepper, VA and Lisa Kelch (Jeremy) of Hundred, WV; great-grandmother of Joshua Tung, Alexander Tung, Dolores Tung, Remedios Tung and Ivy Kelch; sister of the late Jack E. Deal.
Eleanor always enjoyed public speaking. She took elocution lessons in high school, gave readings and had prominent parts in school plays. She began dating her future husband, Bill Crago, when they were both 16. He joined the Navy and she enrolled in the Uniontown Hospital School of Nursing, serving in the Cadet Nurse Corps and becoming a Registered Nurse. Eleanor and Bill were married after WWII. Their 55 year marriage produced a daughter, Diane, and son, Scott, leading to 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Family time has always been a priority to Eleanor with many joyful family gatherings over the years.
While raising a family and working as a school nurse Eleanor earned a BS in Education from California State College. She worked in the Uniontown Area School District for 29 years and was PSEA District President for 2 years. In 1963 she was in charge of organizing 3 Sabin Polio vaccine clinics in the community. Eleanor and Bill liked to travel. Their trips included Hong Kong, to visit their son-in-law’s family, two trips to Europe, visits to all 50 states, mostly in their motor home, and many week-end jaunts. Helping and taking care of others has always been a big part of Eleanor’s life. An active member of the Third Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, she taught adult Sunday School, was a member of the sewing and Bible Study groups and served as a Deacon.
In 2008 she moved to UPMC Lighthouse Pointe, O'Hara Twp. with her cat, Chloe, where she was on the Residents Board, officially welcomed new residents, and always did what she could to help her neighbors. She is now a member of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. Eleanor always had a project going and a book to read. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and needle work, and became an avid quilter. Her family has been blessed with beautiful quilts and many cherished hand-made items. She also enjoyed being a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).
