Thomas Francis Walsh, M.D., born December 19, 1953, in Wilkes Barre, PA, formerly of Fox Chapel, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at his home in Erie, PA. After graduating from Central Catholic High School, Dr. Walsh attended The Ohio State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Zoology and was a member of the Varsity Men’s Soccer team. Dr. Walsh then began his Navy career as an Aviation Officer Candidate. He was commissioned as an Ensign and completed Naval Flight Officer training. He remained in the Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander until 1990 and was a lifelong member of The Tailhook Association. Following his naval training, he attended medical school at La Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. He completed General Surgery training at McKeesport Hospital, where he met his wife, Nicolette, and Urologic Surgery residency at West Virginia University. He was a certified member of the American Board of Urology and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Once he finished training, he joined his late father, Dr. John Walsh, in practice in Pittsburgh. He continued practicing Urology in several communities across Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia for more than 35 years.
In addition to Dr. Walsh’s academic and professional achievements, he had a multitude of interests and talents. Dr. Walsh had a passion for military history, aviation, sailing and auto-mechanics. He was a talented musician and Grammy-nominated mastering engineer, having mastered many albums regionally and internationally. Dr. Walsh was a linguist, a fitness enthusiast and Ohio State Buckeye fan. He cherished all of his friendships and his band, Hardshell Harmony. He was a gifted and published photographer – his favorite subjects being his beloved wife, children and grandchildren.
Dr. Walsh is preceded in death by his father, Dr. John Walsh, his sister, Kathleen Walsh, and niece, Dr. Sarah Levitz. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Dr. Nicolette (Castillenti) Walsh; his children, Leslie Cyprych (Gregory), Dr. Emily Walsh (Stephen McCarthy), Dr. Julie Walsh and Natalie Walsh; his beloved grandchildren, Stephen Walsh McCarthy, Niko Francis Cyprych and baby girl Cyprych; his mother, Geraldine Walsh; his siblings Mary Elizabeth Schwartz (Robert), Ann Walsh (Peg Bennett), Maureen Walsh, Ellen Drury (Scott), Jane Levitz (Michael), John Walsh (Beth) and Eileen Matthews (Brian); and many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and family on Monday, July 15th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Avenue, Aspinwall. A parting prayer will be held at Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 16th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish, St. Scholastica Church, 309 Brilliant Ave. Aspinwall. Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, O’Hara Township.
