Daniel Robert Delaney
Dan Delaney, age 81, of O’Hara Twp., died peacefully on November 21, 2024 with his family by his side. Born in Pittsburgh in 1943, he is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary “Dee” Delaney, daughter Anne of Sintra, Portugal, son Dan Delaney Jr. (Haley) of Wilmette, IL, their children Adele and Jack Delaney, and sister-in-law Rose Hammond Delaney. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Annette Delaney, and his brother, John F. Delaney, M.D.
Dan loved the law! He retired after 52 years of practice, most recently as Senior Counsel at Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote, and formerly as managing partner of Laubach, Fulton & Delaney. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh (1965) where he tapped into Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK National Leadership Honorary), received his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (1968) and was a First Lieutenant, U.S. Army Reserve Military Intelligence Corps. He was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the Federal District Courts of Pennsylvania and the United States Court of Appeals Third Circuit. With an emphasis on labor and employment law, Dan served countless business entities, formed and represented large labor unions, and acted as outside general counsel for an elder care corporation that operates continuing care retirement communities. Acceptable to both management and labor, he was frequently selected as an arbitrator to hear and decide disputes from panels of the American Arbitration Association and PA Bureau of Mediation.
Active in public service, Dan was a board member and former chair of the Salvation Army’s Greater Pittsburgh Advisory Board, where he was honored as a life member in August 2024; Board Secretary of Brother’s Brother Foundation; former member of the Fox Chapel Area Adult Education Board; Eucharistic Minister; and former president and board member of the Pittsburgh Mediation Center. At the time of his death, he was leading a group of nonprofits in pursuit of temporary housing and services for unhoused people in Allegheny County.
In addition to the practice of law, Dan was a gifted watercolorist, painting scenes that caught his eye in his many travels with Dee. Dan also had a love of music that blossomed during his time as a violinist with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony and a saxophonist leading his jazz band known as “Dan Delaney and the Modern Sounds.” He enjoyed socializing at the Pittsburgh Field Club, playing golf, having coffee with friends to discuss current events, riding his new e-bike on scenic Pittsburgh trails, and taking his grandchildren- the continuing joys of his life- for drives in his perfectly waxed Corvette after giving them an art lesson. He was also an exceptional handyman and gardener, taking great pride in his homes.
Most importantly, Dan was an amazing husband to Dee and role model for his children and grandchildren. He loved his family deeply and worked tirelessly to provide for them and instill strong values. He will be remembered for his generosity, strong Catholic faith, work ethic, wit, and intelligence. He will be dearly missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd at Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home, 100 Center Ave, Aspinwall. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 4th at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish, St. Joseph Church, 342 Dorseyville Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15215.
