Rev. William Dewey Erving, Sr.

Age 81 of Fox Chapel, peacefully went home to be with the Lord, with family by his side on Thursday, October 26, 2017.  Beloved husband of Mary Young Erving.  Loving father of Richard (Gini) Erving of Missoula Montana, David (Rachel) Erving of San Diego, California and Mary “Mimi” Erving of Fox Chapel and the late William Dewey Erving, Jr.  Cherished grandfather of Lia, Will, Nina, Carys, Kyland, Maggie and A.J. (Shannon) and great grandfather of Sophia. Son of the late Rowland and Elizabeth Erving and brother of the late Rowland Erving, Jr.  Bill attended Shadyside Academy and then went on to complete his studies at Mercersburg Academy, followed by a year at RPI.  He then enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1955 and served in the Air branch.  He married his wife, Mimi, of 60 years in 1957 and they began their married life stationed in Kodiak Island Alaska.  At the completion of his service, Bill began his career with IBM, and later became the owner of his own company, Fire Safety Supply.  Several years later, he and his family moved for Bill to complete an education in Bible teachings at Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina, where first began his prison ministries.  He became an ordained minister with the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in July 1980.  He went on to pastor four churches within the CMA:  Desplaines Alliance, Saginaw Alliance, Farmington Hills Alliance and Portersville Alliance Church.  He also worked with several organizations in the capacity of ministry and development including Ketchum, African Enterprise, Samaritan’s Purse and McGuire Memorial Home.  He served as a board member of Portersville Christian School, and as a retired pastor, his joy was to continue his preaching as a guest minister or Sunday school teacher.  A funeral service, with a reception following will be held to celebrate his life on Wednesday, November 1st at 1pm at Christ Church of Fox Chapel, 630 Squaw Run Road East.  Interment Allegheny Cemetery, Lawrenceville.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions to be made to Christ Church of Fox Chapel or Dorseyville Alliance Church.
