Norman Mowry Steere

Age 86, of Oakmont, formerly of South Drive, Fox Chapel, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. He is survived by his extraordinary and devoted wife of 62 years Blyth Barnes Steere; his daughters, Blyth Bailey of Edina, Minnesota, and Margaret Steere of Redwood City, California, and his son, Jamie Steere (Loretta Pursell) of Mill Valley, California; 2 grandchildren, Will Bailey, of New York, NY, and Blycie Bailey, of Edina, Minnesota; and his sister, Beverly Comber (Bob Comber), of Williamsburg, Virginia.  Mr. Steere was a respected banker, having spent most of his career at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, ultimately serving as its Vice Chairman and member of the Board of Directors.  During his early years at Mellon Bank, he and his family lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina while he worked with the Bank of London and South America from 1970-1972.  Following his retirement from Mellon Bank, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Citytrust in Bridgeport, Connecticut for 2 years.  Mr. Steere served on numerous boards, including Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania (Chairman), the Regional Industrial Development Corp (Executive Vice President), Shady Side Hospital and Shady Side Foundation.  He was also a member of various clubs, including Fox Chapel Golf Club, Rolling Rock Club, Duquesne Club, Laurel Valley Golf Club, Allegheny HYP Club, Ocean Club (Ocean Ridge, Florida) and Riomar (Vero Beach, Florida). Mr. Steere was born in Chepachet, Rhode Island and grew up there on his family’s apple orchard until he attended Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Steere was an extraordinary athlete, excelling in both track & field and football, and was inducted to the Moses Brown Hall of Fame in 2003 for his many athletic achievements, including setting school records in the shotput, javelin and high hurdles, some of which still stand.  In 1948, he was awarded the Headmaster’s Cup in honor of his superior academic and athletic accomplishments.  After graduating from Moses Brown in 1948, Mr. Steere attended Brown University, graduating in 1952, and received his Master of Business Administration from Harvard University Business School in 1957.  Between his first and second years of business school, Mr. Steere served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed in New Jersey. Friends are invited to raise a glass in celebration of “the Boomer’s” life on Saturday, October 28, 2017 between the hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Fox Chapel Golf Club, 426 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania in the small lounge on the lower level (the “Yellow Room”).  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
