Age 88, passed away July 12, 2018.
The eternal optimist, Carl always lived his life with the glass half-full. As a New York fur associate said of him, “Carl Herrmann was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. He came from a world of civility, kindness, responsibility, and respect for all people. He worshiped and revered God, his nation, and his family”.
Carl graduated from Shadyside Academy and Allegheny College. He was the quarterback of both football teams and he was an outstanding pitcher for both schools. Out of college, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but instead chose to become the third- generation proprietor of Carl W. Herrmann Furs, which became his passion for the rest of his life.
Carl served stateside in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Fox Chapel Golf Club, the Royal Order of Jesters, the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, the Executive Board and Chairman Emeritus of the Fur Information Council of America, the Hackers Golf Group and Christ Church of Fox Chapel.
As a true German, Carl never met a beer he didn’t like. You could oftentimes find him with his closest friends at the German Club, Teutonia Mannerchor, for lunch.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl William Herrmann Jr. and Helen Mills Herrmann, his wife Melita "Pi" Jacobs Herrmann, and his brother Richard Hayes Herrmann. Pi and Carl were married for 54 years before her death in 2006.
Survivors include daughters Melissa Herrmann Eason (John) of Nashville, TN; Victoria Herrmann Jenkinson (Richard) of Intervale, NH; son Carl William Herrmann IV of Pittsburgh; grandchildren John Cheek Eason Jr. (Meredith); Richard Dale Jenkinson IV (Lindsay); Peter William Jenkinson; Riley Mills Herrmann; Matthew William Herrmann; Haley Elizabeth Herrmann; sister-in-law Marjory DeLancy Herrmann of Lancaster, PA; and his close companion, Bebe Adams.
The family would like to give special thanks to Ruby Giles and caregiver, Shirley Gasper.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at Christ Church of Fox Chapel on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow the service.
